Bolts

[edit] Intro
- Bolting is both controversial and difficult. Bolts permanently scar the canyon wall. It is especially difficult to place a bolt in soft sandstone. Future canyoneers often find it difficult to evaluate the quality of a bolt placement. The safety of these canyoneers may depend on the security of your bolt placement.
- Please see canyoneering culture and links to get a sense of bolting ethics. Bolting is generally discouraged unless absolutely necessary to escape a real bind or if it will reduce the overall impact of canyoneers in a canyon. It should only be done with skill and thought to impact of the anchor (is the placement secure? will it create unnecessary pull grooves? will it survive a flash-flood? etc).
